Illini Football Gets No Love

Posted in Current Events, Sports at 2:01 pm by Administrator

Apparently the Illini haven’t lost enough football games this season. In a story titled ”Top 10: Most affordable college football towns”, CNN Money actually took away Illinois’ lone DI-A win.

Even though Gillespie [the creator of a price comparison index among college football towns] makes a great case for college towns, he doesn’t live in one himself. That may have something to do with the fact that he roots for his alma mater, the University of Illinois.

The Fighting Illini are 2-7 on the year and have lost to such powerhouses (not!) as Syracuse (3-5) and Michigan State (4-5). They don’t figure to improve on that record this week when they welcome the Buckeyes to Champaign, Illinois.

I promptly sent an e-mail to correct the error.

Two Games that Really Didn’t Matter

Posted in Current Events, My Life, Sports at 1:21 pm by Administrator

It was a good weekend for football at schools I have attended. Coming into this weekend, the Universities of Idaho and Illinois had combined for a record of 2-6 with neither yet defeating a DI-A team.  However, one week after blowing what was as much as a 17-point advantage against the Irish, Michigan State tossed the Illini a bone.  It was a potential momentum changing game for Illinois who will face Indiana, the one Big Ten team that may not actually be favored to beat them this year, and struggling Bobcats of Ohio the next two weeks.  It is possible that the Illini could play themselves to winning record by the second weekend in October.  Quite a feat for a team that had only managed one conference win (against Indiana) in the last three seasons.

Also, and I know that you didn’t see the highlights from this one, in hills of northern Utah some 8600 fans – and they would have to be hard-core fans to watch this one – showed up to see who would come out on the bottom of the heap when Idaho and Utah State took the field.  The Vandals beat the Aggies 41 to 21 giving Idaho its first DI-A win and dropping USU to a sorry 0-5.  Despite the decisive victory, Idaho is not likely to challenge Boise State for top spot in the WAC
