In an interview with the NY Times’ Maureen Dowd, David Geffen said what everyone else has been thinking (read the Newsweek article that referenced this).
“Everybody in politics lies,” said Geffen, “but [the Clintons] do it with such ease, it’s troubling.” Geffen raised the most eyebrows when he referred to the former president as “a reckless guy” who “gave his enemies a lot of ammunition to hurt him and distract the country.” Geffen was not just speaking in the past tense. “I don’t think anybody believes that in the last six years, all of a sudden Bill Clinton has become a different person,”
…Easily one of my favorite quotes of this week.

In response to my brother’s comment on my last post, here is a link to a video of Chief Illiniwek dancing at halftime of the Rutgers game in 2005. Unfortunately it’s about 34 MB. Thanks to Matt Miller and whoever brought a video camera to that game.

Moscow, ID, home of the University of Idaho (go Vandals) got some press for their annual Mardi Gras celebration. Along with the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, Moscow Mardi Gras is one of only two things that ever happen there.
Moscow (pronounced MAHS-koh) had a parade from the early 1980s until about five years ago, when the highway was rerouted, blocking the parking lot where it had started, said Jerry Schutz, who for about 15 years was a board member for Moscow Mardi Gras Inc.
…
The group now holds afternoon entertainment for children and raises money that evening by selling $15 “Mardi Gras tickets” good for entrance to all of the town’s bars, which feature live music. That alcoholic connection prompted the [U]niversity [of Idaho] to dissociate itself from the festival, so the money now goes to children’s charities, Schutz said.
What they left out of the account of Moscow Mardi Gras was that until the summer of 2002 (about five years ago when, you’ll recall, they stopped holding a parade), when two uninhibited female students came up short on rent one month and started a topless car wash behind their apartment building, it was legal for women to travel about town stripped to the waist. The party atmosphere at the Mardi Gras celebration greatly increased the odds of witnessing drunken, college-aged women making the most of that freedom and, according to many I spoke with (I never attended the festivities myself), was a draw as well.

I saw this passage on the Fox News Political Grapevine page. Hard as it is to believe, there doesn’t appear to be enough work to justify Congress’ working five days a week.
Idaho Republican Congressman Mike Simpson says, “we’re cramming two days of work into five days.” Many say that Congress doesn’t have enough substantive work to do right now because legislation has yet to pass through committee — so members are returning to Washington for votes on such things as birthday wishes, post office dedications and sports team congratulations.
Maybe those left idle by all this waiting around could come up with good solutions to some of this nation’s problems. I haven’t heard too many good ideas coming out of Washington lately.
