Yahoo Finance had a piece about how the federal government spends our money.  The most interesting category on the list of expenses was the total of payments to individuals (Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, etc.); this describes almost 60% of the federal budget.

According to the Tax Foundation, $305,000,000,000 will be spend preparing federal income tax returns in the U.S. for 2007 (I’m not sure if that’s the calender year or the tax year).  That is 22.8% of the total taxes that will be generated.
