Big Ten Network
So the Big Ten is getting its own network — Great. I checked Time Warner’s website yesterday to see if I even have a snowball’s chance of getting them to throw that into my basic cable package, but it doesn’t look good. The message on their site said:
“We think that the best place for this network is on a sports tier, so people who want this premium sports programming can choose to pay for it. This way, it would not add to the cost of your Standard Service.”
No, it’ll get stuck in a sports package with 12 other channels that I don’t want to watch but will have to still pay for. Additionally, this will undoubtedly require me to also purchase the standard digital cable package with another 20 ridiculous channels for another $12-$15.
And as long as we’re talking about paying for channels on basic cable you don’t want to watch, I get FSN Ohio now. The only teams in Ohio that are worth watching are Ohio State, the Bengals, the Browns, and the Cavs (and those last three are a real stretch) and none of their regular season games are shown on FSN Ohio anyway. You can watch the Reds lose all summer though.
I guess I’ll have to wait and see how it all shakes out, but it looks like I’m going to have to keep choking down all this SEC crap that they keep putting on the TV here.

Who is Black Enough to be President
We all know that Bill Clinton was the first black president, but apparently Barack Obama isn’t cutting the mustard among some demographics. Obama’s wife had to defend his race to a group of primarily black women on the south side of Chicago last weekend.
This came just a few short days after Elizabeth Edwards bemoaned the fact that her husband was neither black nor a woman. I think that you can have surgery to fix that whole problem with his sex, but if Obama isn’t black enough with one African parent then Edwards is probably out of luck. Actually, that would be almost the perfect progressive candidate: a Southern, Socialist, transsexual candidate with a supportive wife who wishes he were black.

The Disappearing Vote
Should illegal immigrants receive food stamps or housing assistance? Apparently 214 members of the House think so (213 depending on when you ask); there is something more disturbing about this though. According to one report, voting on the amendment to an agriculture bill was closed when one member was allowed to change his vote; the amendment, which would have barred illegals from receiving the aforementioned benefits, had passed 215 to 213 before his change of heart. Another report states that there was a flury of vote swapping after the motion was closed.
Worse still, after Republican representatives walked out in protest of the resulting 214 to 214 vote (or 212 to 216, either of which would mean that the amendment failed), no mention of the vote was entered into the record.
