Driven

Posted in Current Events, Fun Stuff at 2:15 pm by Administrator

When I was in graduate school at the University of Illinois, I worked in a lab with three other guys — one Israeli, one Chinese, and one Korean.  The gentleman from Korea, “Sam”, was a terrible driver; in the 18 months or so that we worked together he wrecked his car three times and received multiple tickets additionally.  Every time something would happen, the Israeli guy would half seriously, half jokingly proclaim that all Koreans were terrible drivers.

Sam often spent weekends visiting friends who lived within a couple hours’ drive of Champaign (I don’t know for sure, but I think he was just about the only one in his circle of friends who had a car).  Among the most regularly visited friends was a young lady who was a grad student at Indiana University; she, as it happens, was also Korean.  After a couple months of feeling stranded in the big town of Bloomington, IN she decided it was time to become a licensed driver herself and Sam volunteered his car for the test.  After two attempts at the driving portion of the test, the young woman had had no luck and at that point was required to wait three months before trying again.

Being two reasonably bright folks who also happened to share the same last name, Sam put her name on a couple of his accounts to indicate her residence in the state of Illinois (is that considered mail fraud?).  After a couple of weeks, utility bills in hand, the young lady was finally able to pass the test in the state of Illinois.  Of course obtaining a license in the state of Indiana would then only require a written test which she passed with flying colors.  After relaying the entire tail to us one morning and enduring some additional teasing, Sam admitted that driving was quite a challenge for most Koreans.  I remembered that story this week when I saw a report of the South Korean woman who failed 771 driving tests.

Go Vandals!

Posted in Current Events, Fun Stuff, Sports, Uncategorized at 1:07 pm by Administrator

University of Idaho football fans now officially have nothing to watch at Vandals games.  The cheerleaders ordered new uniforms after receiving complaints that the old ones were too revealing.  They may not sell another ticket the rest of the season.

Update… They actually had a couple of pictures on the FNC this morning and they covered more than most pro football cheerleaders’ outfits.

Sabbath Year

A very cynical friend and bible scholar sent me this yesterday in an e-mail.

Is this what’s guiding W’s handling of Wall Street?  This is his eighth year not his seventh.

“At the end of every seven years you shall grant a release of debts.  And this is the form of the release: Every creditor who has lent anything to his neighbor shall release it; he shall not require it of his neighbor or his brother because it is called the LORD’s release.”   (Deuteronomy 15:1-2)

Gore ‘08

Rep. Tim Mahoney says Gore could get the nod at the Democratic convention this year.  I don’t know why we waste all this time and money on voting anyhow.

Playing Dress-Up

Posted in Current Events, Fun Stuff, Politics at 2:07 pm by Administrator

So Drudge runs a picture of Obama dressed up in Somali garb the week before Hillary Clinton’s last stand in OH, TX, and PA; no one believes that this is a coincidence.  The interesting part is that Obama is pissed.  His campaign manager ranted:

“On the very day that Senator Clinton is giving a speech about restoring respect for America in the world, her campaign has engaged in the most shameful, offensive fear-mongering we’ve seen from either party in this election,”

“This is part of a disturbing pattern that led her county chairs to resign in Iowa, her campaign chairman to resign in New Hampshire, and it’s exactly the kind of divisive politics that turns away Americans of all parties and diminishes respect for America in the world,”

What?  Hillary Clinton has done some stuff that qualifies as shameful and offensive to be sure, and I believe that she could genuinely diminish respect for America throughout the world, but this seems pretty tame to me.  Did they doctor the picture?  They could have photoshopped a machine gun into his hands or something.  It seems like he’s implying that there is something embarrassing about dressing like a Somali elder; he’s not uniting with them apparently.  If you read the comments at the bottom of the story it’s full of people who were going to vote for Obama, but now are sure that this guy is gonna jump on a jet and fly it into a building.

This is funny on several levels, especially after Obama has been working so hard to distance himself from his spiritual advisor and pastor Jeremiah Wright, who declared that Louis Farrakhan (a fellow who himself could probably be described as being a little divisive and offensive) “epitomized greatness.”

Just when I thought that this election year couldn’t get any more entertaining, I see something like this; I hope that everyone keeps up all the good work.

The overwhelming majority of U.S. presidents have had blue eyes; very interesting, especially for those of us with blue eyes.

Straight Men Are The Best Drivers

Posted in Current Events, Fun Stuff at 1:47 pm by Administrator

A study at the Queen Mary, University of London have concluded that straight men are better drivers than both women and gay men.  I’ll being thinking of that the next time some some apparently lost man nearly runs me off of the road (it’s disturbing, but in a town of about 20,000 people that happens to me or my wife about once a week — it really upsets her).
